Hugues de Wurstemberger has been member of the Vu agency,
since its creation in 1986. This former member of the Pontifical
Swiss Guard has made a namemade a name for himself with his
pictures of the Vatican guards, exhibited at the opening ceremony
of the Elysée museum in Lausanne in 1985.In 1990 he
won the Niepce Prize and started a large-scale work on the
Swiss Alps and the rustic world. This follower of the square
format interrogates the links between the alpine landscape,
the dairy activity and the men who live upon it, from views
which are always amazing. In fact, he displays a disappearing
world. The book “Peasants” was published in 1997.
Parallely to the actuality, "closer than close to report",
he simultaneously photographs, the refugees from El Salvador
for Médecins sans Frontières, then the sahraouis,
the nomads of the Western Sahara. More recently, he made portraits
of handicaped people that he gathered up in the book "Personnes"
(2001).
The work which will be presented in Kortrijk, which begins
as a book and which metamorphosizes into an exhibition, relates
a longer and more intimate journey: The territory of time
and of the family's memory. This story which binds him to
his children has been developing for eighteen years: “These
pictures are the ten fingers of my two hands, of the daughter,
of the son, of Pauline and of Juju, brother and sister, of
the mother and of the border escort. They are frail and stubborn,
in stained glass, innards. I 've known them for so long, intimate
sheen, that they've become legendary to me, the story I tell.
". The tale recounted by Hugues de Wurstemberger is close
to that of Hansel and Grethel: “I will tell it as it
comes back to me, comes back to my memory, as in the coma
of a dark room for a film projection many a time mounted,
cut and remounted, offbeat from the commencement, the commensemencement,
the rain, sometimes gleaming, like those pictures made of
silver grains”.
