In Japan, a Fukusa is a square of
silk used as a gift-wrapping. According
to tradition, the outside matters
as much as the inside. Fukusa is
a play between Françoise
André, exquisitely nonconformist
fashion designer for male, and Xavier
Alphand, a photographer whom aesthetic
is resolutely graphical. A poetic,
fanciful, dramatized exhibition.
Fukusa, Françoise André’s
second collection
Worked out from a research on aesthetic
and traditional arts in Japan, also
inspired by Hokusai’s sketchbooks,
that collection associates some
basics of the Japanese culture to
male dress code of the West. Asymmetry,
impermanence, non attachment…
The notions from the ZEN tradition
are transparently cut out to be
joviality and fantasy.

Following the lead of Françoise
André, Xavier Alphand takes
up and revisits the Japanese aesthetic
codes. Just like Japanese prints,
his photographs do not focus on
the scope but on the subject. Patterns,
objects, figures without any core
nor context, partial truths, magnificent
but unreal colors… Isn’t
it true that when one gets rid of
the unnecessary, one really reaches
the essentials?
