This exhibition proposes photographs
making use of the relationship between
lace and body, clothes or fashion
but also presenting lace as a material
for an experimentation of photographic
processes. Here is a nice way of
building bridges between fine arts
department and lace department in
the 90’s, whereas the Cité
International de la Dentelle et
de la Mode is still in the early
stages.
Today, as both collections are
about to take off in two different
places, a bond still lies between
them: the issue of lace’s
symbolic representations.

A new museum and a place to live
dedicated to mechanic lace is on
the go in Calais and should open
in 2009. The museum trail is spread
along a former factory built in
the 1870’s and made of three
U-shaped buildings.
That authentic site is a major
asset of the project. You can get
onto several themes:
- Handlace, a craft industry with
relevant economic stakes in Europe
and that industries will copy with
their machines,
- Lace’s industrial adventure
in Calais reveals a complex technical
history and a wonderful spreading
in the new City,
- The production unit where the
looms will run,
- Trendy laces in the 20th century
point out the change in the silhouettes
and the lifestyles,
- News and futures of lace…
It is a place for memory but also
for modernity. As an assert, the
architects proposed an adjoining
building symbolizing lace through
a glass wall with printings of Jacquard
card. What’s more the scientific
and cultural programme of the City
will allow spaces for specific public.
Creators and researchers, amateurs
and professionals, mechanics, textile
or fashion enthusiasts will be put
together and will be able to practise
in several places:
- a resource centre including a
specialized library and a material
library,
- technical workshop for lacemaker,
design, customization,
- an exhibition area, an auditorium
and a fashion show area.
This new site also offers a restaurant,
a shop and outside areas for discovery
and enjoyment.
More than the expected cultural
programming: exhibitions, workshops,
training courses or study days,
events around lace will be organized
with partners.
