Famous for his shocking photographs
of strange, misshapen or monstrous
individuals, presented in almost
unbearable mise-en-scene, the artist
introduces here his recent series
“Fashion for New York Times”,
in which he pays a tribute to that
fashion accessory, the hat, and
more widely, to women.
Considered as true photographic
paintings, the pictorial references
are, as always, numerous, but not
as classical as in his previous
works. Witkin says “I see
it as a challenge in which historical
and contemporary aesthetics are
combined.” In other words,
art and fashion.
Returns, quotes, winks, collage,
give a meaning to these colorized
pictures which take the artist away
from his usual qualification of
an “apostle of the unpleasant
beauty and of abnormality”.
